Constructive Criticism Defined
Thumper's Mother put it best: "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."
As speakers, we are all working to improve our skill. The best way to accomplish this is to constantly critique and accept criticism of one's performance.
Constructive Criticism is that which helps the speaker and the listener. It is advice or ideas that will IMPROVE the speech, debate, or assignment, and help the speaker and listener learn. Constructive criticism compliments areas of success and strength, and uplifts areas of weakness that can be improved.
A good speaker will listen to input from the listeners, graciously accept compliments, and take feedback to improve. A good speaker will take constructive criticism and use the advice when it is appropriate. A good listener will be considerate, pay attention to the speaker, and offer compliments to point out exceptionally good aspects of the speech, and ideas to improve. A good critic will not get angry if their suggestion is not used (sometimes the ideas don't quite work).
Constructive criticism is encouraged in this class. Destructive comments are prohibited.
Good Examples:
That was a wonderful speech. I especially liked the conclusion- it was so vivid the way you told that story and wrapped it all up in one good strong point. You might think about telling another story at the beginning to improve your introduction and gain attention.
What a unique topic! I've never heard anyone speak on that subject before. You shared a lot of information that I'd never heard, it was so interesting. Did you ever consider using visual aids? It might help the audience remember your points, and you shared so many useful tips, I'd like to be sure to remember them all.
Your style is really unique. You spoke clearly and were easy to understand. I enjoyed the jokes. However, you didn't organize your speech, point by point, and at times I wasn't sure where you were. You might use better signposts (first, second, next), to make it easier for the listener to follow along.
Bad and UNACCEPTABLE Examples:
What a horrible speech! I hope I don't ever have to listen to that again.
Your speech is so boring I could hardly stay awake!
The bad examples were all inconsiderate and mean. They didn't point out strong traits in the speech, nor did they give helpful advice. Instead they only served to hurt someone's feelings. This is USELESS. Notice all the good examples included a compliment, pointed out the strongest area of the speech and what you liked best, and offered specific advice on how to improve. Constructive Criticism is USEFUL.
